The Magic of Pro-bono Partnerships

25 years ago Richard Hahlo, co-founder and Director of DR, first had the privilege of working with students at the Market Theatre Laboratory in South Africa, and our ongoing pro-bono partnership was born. As the education arm of the world famous theatre, The Laboratory is committed to providing opportunities to talented youth from disadvantaged backgrounds who would not otherwise be able to pursue their passions for the arts. Over the years our trainers have had the chance to meet and work with these students, drawing on their own theatrical specialities from voice training to comedy.

Fast forward to summer 2019, where DR trainer and magician Tom Silburn delivered a workshop on ‘The Tempest’. Shakespeare’s comedy about a shipwrecked crew plays with the supernatural and magical arts, so it was only fitting to have Tom bring his powers of illusion to this workshop, exploring how to bring magic to life on stage.
